Day 3 - Tango watching, spirit romancing & condo shopping

Turistas! We started the day in the tony cemetery Recoletta where all the well-heeled Argentinians are laid to rest in monolithic mausoleums. Look closely at the pictures for ghosts and cats. The place is rife with both. You'll notice Evita's grave amongst the pics. Strangely enough there is one grave with signs directing you to it and it is some dude no one knows but no signs to Evita's grave so it is a bit like a macabre Easter egg hunt.

After the Recoletta Cemetery we hopped into a taxi (unbelievably cheap and equally dangerous) and headed to La Boca, to see the Fundancion Proa and Caminita Street. La Boca is a barrio that celebrates its unique flair and independence and in fact claimed itself as a separate Republic from the rest of Argentina. We're not sure what this means. They still speak Spanish and accept Pesos. The Fundacion Proa like all other museums we've visited was closed for renovations. It was due to re-open last January but clearly this has not happened. So we took some pics of the colorful barrio homes surrounding Caminita Street. This area is definitely a tourist trap with its Diego Maradona look alikes and Tango Dancers but it is also very charming and we had a wonderful time at a tiny cafe where tango dancers worked the the 10 by 5 foot space between tables. You'll see a pic of Neysa dancing the Tango with the handsome Diego while I tore up the dance floor with Florencia. The Portenos were put to shame by our moves.

The absolute highlight of the day was arriving at Palermo Viejo. We've resisted going there because we'll be spending 4 nights in the neighborhood at the end of the trip. But after reading that all the veggie restaurants, contemporary galleries and young designers were there, we couldn't take it anymore. We almost died with all the cuteness in every shop on every corner. Not only are the products amazing but every shop is completely designed from floor to ceiling. Since it was dark out we didn't take any pics, but this one restaurant, Olsen, was too much to bear. Look at the forest bathrooms! (No, Judy, it's not a urinal in a forest. It's a urinal in a FAUX forest. How cool is that?) We sat outside and they gave us Olsen blankets for our laps. One pic below is from their patio. Stuart had a vodka peppar martini and Neysa had a mint passion fruit martini. Muy bueno. This was exceptional dining- and still under $40 for all the food, drinks et al. This is where the condo shopping comes in. Who in their right mind wouldn't live here?!

This is so wonderful. I wonder if we should be rethinking the Villa in Tuscany???
